Ultrasound is a diagnostic method that uses high-intensity sound waves to produce the images of structures within the body. It serves as a valuable source of information for several purposes, including diagnosis of various diseases and monitoring the course of pregnancy. Ultrasound can also be used as an image guidance tool during certain medical procedures. The images generated by an ultrasound are known as sonogram. Ultrasound can be categorized into three main types, which includes pregnancy or prenatal ultrasound, diagnostic ultrasound, and ultrasound guidance for procedures. There are several procedures that need ultrasound guidance, such as guiding needle placement to sample fluid or tissue from joints, tendons, muscles, transplant organs, etc. Lesion localization procedures, embryo transfer for in vitro fertilization and nerve blocks are some other medical procedures that make the use of ultrasound guidance. Ultrasound is also used for the management of patients undergoing critical care. The diagnosis and assessment of various medical conditions such as pulmonary edema, pneumothorax and deep vein thrombosis can be done in a rapid manner through ultrasound. This book unravels the recent studies on ultrasound imaging. It strives to provide a fair idea about its applications in critical care. This book is appropriate for students seeking detailed information in this area as well as for experts.

The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technology have paved the way for the use of machine learning applications in health care. These applications address existing challenges in the emergency department such as triage and disposition, early detection of conditions and outcomes, emergency department operations, and therapeutic interventions. Artificial intelligence can be used in three ways in the context of emergency and critical care. The first one is to build risk stratification prediction models in critical care. The second use of AI involves utilizing unsupervised machine learning techniques to divide the varied population into homogeneous subgroups. The third use of AI is for reinforcement learning algorithms to prescribe treatment regimens in a sequential way. The dynamic treatment regime (DTR) model uses reinforcement learning to estimate a set of decision rules, one for each step of intervention. It specifies how to tailor treatments to patients considering their treatment and covariate histories. DTR lowers model complexity and is considered more appropriate for medical epidemiology. This book is a vital tool for all researching or studying the role of AI in emergency medicine. It aims to equip students and experts with the advanced topics and upcoming concepts in this subject.

Serious injury refers to physical trauma caused to a body by an external force that requires immediate medical attention or hospitalization. Falls, burns, acts of violence, road accidents, natural disasters, faulty products, and extreme sports may result in severe injuries. Serious injuries may, but not necessarily lead to permanent disability, impairment or disfigurement. Severe injuries not only involve the physical impact on the body of a patient, but it also affects emotional and mental health. These mental health issues can further have a negative impact on the rate of recovery. The mental health issues which can be caused due to a severe injury include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that is triggered by a shocking event. This condition develops when the symptoms of trauma persist for weeks and months after the stressful event. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a treatment therapy, which is used for a variety of mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, and PTSD. It helps people change their thought patterns in order to influence their behaviors and emotions. This book presents researches on various new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for the care of severely injured patients. From theories to research to practical applications, clinical studies related to all contemporary topics of relevance to this area of medicine have been included herein.

Closed injuries and abdominal wounds have always been a difficult surgical problem. The presence of many vital organs in the abdominal cavity, the specifics of their anatomical structure, vascular architectonics, and innervation, the immediate proximity of intestinal contents rich in pathogenic flora, and the presence of organs producing extremely active enzymes lead to massive internal bleeding, rapid development of peritonitis, and irreversible changes in organs and tissues. The problem of modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to abdominal trauma is very relevant and requires detailed coverage. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the different types of abdominal trauma and their treatment.

The war between realism and conventionalism bitterly rages ever strong. We find early skirmishes in Plato's Cratylus, in which Socrates examines and demonstrates the problems with both of these views of language; and the contemporary realist-empiricist debates in the philosophy of science carry on that same traditional feud. The feud in both of these cases, and many historical links in between, is the same: do humankind's concepts pick out the real furniture of the world, or not? This discussion is of course only one facet of a broader dialogue that concerns the very relationship between mind and world, and what I would like to do in this dissertation is call to our attention (and challenge) a particular presupposition that underlies both realism and conventionalism, in the hopes that we might make some headway in the debate between those two rivals, both alike in dignity. Of course, to assume that I might settle the issue once and for all would be a very bold move indeed, and so for those who fancy boldness, I invite you to take up the charge that I will begin (or, as you will see, continue) in the following chapters. For those who prefer more of a restrained approach, please consider these remarks not as intending to settle the dilemma, but rather to offer a third option few give much attention these days.

"Stories of Intensive Care" is a series of 23 stories about real patients cared for in the intensive care unit. The author, a retired pulmonary (lung) physician, directed the Mt. Sinai Hospital of Cleveland's Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) in the 1980s and 1990s. Each story highlights a medical challenge or ethical dilemma he encountered. The first chapter gives an overview of intensive care rounds, how the MICU operates, and what happens, when, during MICU rounds, a patient's heart suddenly stops beating. Succeeding chapters are devoted to one or two patients and the challenges they present. Like Harold Switek, too ill to leave MICU, too psychotic to stay. And Willie the Yellow Man, whose love affair with alcohol exceeded anything you've ever seen. You'll meet a young socialite hospitalized with rapid onset of total paralysis and wonder (as we did): will she ever hug her kids again? And another woman about to have her baby during a terrifying asthma attack. Then there's the young accountant who slept in a coma-for six months! In "The Red Baron" Dr. Martin tells the strange saga of a man who claimed to be coughing up blood, only that wasn't his real problem. Another patient, dubbed "The Wild Man," is deposited in the emergency department by a family member, who then disappears. The wild man is delirious, but why? These and other patients profiled in the book are all real, with names and other identifying features changed as necessary. In answer to the question "Should a physician write about his or her patients?, Dr. Martin states: "Emphatically, yes, if he or she is so inclined and provided that privacy is maintained. In a literary sense, doctors and nurses are privileged. What we see in our daily jobs is more than enough to fill many interesting books. We just have to find the time and inclination to tell others about what we do, and to make the work seem as interesting in print as it is in real life.

This is a multi-dimensional story, heartwarming and encouraging, scary and sad; a roller coaster ride of emotions which exemplifies some powerful tenets. One is to take care of what matters most in your life. Another is the value of commitment to one you love, as true love can mean much more than expressing passion and affection. A very poignant lesson was to never leave a loved one alone in the hospital. The importance of family and friends in helping endure and overcome difficulties in time of crisis is reaffirmed. We learn that we should never give up, either on ourselves or our injured loved ones. We learn about selfishness and unselfishness. We are warned against giving away too much of our power by trusting the wrong people, and against relying upon the benevolence of institutions. We learn how much there is to be gained by trusting the right professional people, and how to recognize who they are. This story should resonate with anyone who has longed to identify with true love. It is all the more fascinating because it is true.
