Novalis (1772-1801) Hymner til natten blev publiceret år 1800 i tidsskriftet Athäneum. Digtsuiten blev hurtigt en af romantikkens centrale litterære tekster.

Den danske oversætter Lars Christiansen har fra tysk oversat et udvalg af Novalis’ prosatekster nedskrevet i årene 1797-1799: ”Blomsterstøvs-fragmentet”, ”Kristenheden eller Europa”, ”Monolog”, ”Tro og kærlighed” samt ”Politiske aforismer”Om forfatteren Myten om den himmelvendte og allerede i sit jordiske hylster afdøde digter ligger langt fra sandheden om den alsidige Novalis, der også havde en praktisk, jordbunden og stringent-intellektuel side. Hans viden var uhyre omfattende og altid drevet af en universel filosofisk ambition om at finde videnskabernes indbyrdes sammenhæng og deres grund i menneskets ånd. Ikke mindst var han dybt optaget af de politiske og sociale forandringer i sin turbulente samtid, hvis altafgørende begivenhed var Den Franske Revolution i 1789.

Novalis: Philosophical, Literary, and Poetic Writings assembles, for the first time in English, translations of Novalis's published philosophical works, a large share of his surviving philosophical notes and fragments, his two unfinished novels (The Disciples at Saïs and Heinrich von Ofterdingen), and the Hymns to the Night. This first scholarly edition in English of the philosophical writings of Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg), the German Romantic poet, philosopher, and mining engineer, includes two collections of fragments published in 1798, Miscellaneous Observations and Faith and Love, the controversial essay Christendom or Europe, and substantial selections from his unpublished notebooks.

Ein naturphilosophisches Romanfragment aus dem Spatwerk von Novalis: Der Text, der aus den Teilen "e;Der Lehrling"e; und "e;Die Natur"e; besteht, ist weniger durch Handlung als durch Gesprache und Reflexionen uber die Natur charakterisiert und beleuchtet die Zusammenhange zwischen Selbsterkenntnis und Natur. Schauplatz ist der Tempel von Sais im heutigen Agypten. -

Ein ergreifendes Märchen über die Suche nach Weisheit und das Finden von Liebe: Die schöne Rosenblüte und der junge Hyazinth, der sich oft zu viele Sorgen macht, lieben sich. Als ein Fremder Hyazinth von der großen weiten Welt erzählt und ihm bei seinem Aufbruch ein Büchlein da lässt, verfällt Hyazinth in seinen alten Schwermut und interessiert sich nicht mehr für Rosenblüte. Schließlich bricht er auf, die Götting der Weisheit, „die himmlische Jungfrau", zu suchen. Als er deren Schleier hebt, erlebt er eine freudige Überraschung...Novalis (1772-1801) hieß eigentlich Georg Philipp Friedrich von Hardenberg und war ein deutscher Schriftsteller der Frühromantik sowie Philosoph. Während seines Jurastudiums in Jena, Leipzig und Wittenberg begegnete er Schiller und Goethe und befreundete sich u.a. mit Tieck und den Schlegel-Brüdern. Nach einem weiteren Studium der Naturwissenschaften erschienen 1798 seine ersten Texte und er gebrauchte erstmals das Pseudonym Novalis. Er starb mit nur 28 Jahren.

Das Kunstmärchen „Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" handelt von einem Mann, der seinen Schatten verkauft – nichtsahnend welche Folge dies hat.E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) gehört bis heute zu den bekanntesten Vertretern der literarischen Epoche der Romantik. Er verfügte über zahlreiche Talente und wirkte nicht nur als Schriftsteller, sondern auch als Musiker und Zeichner.Wilhelm Hauff (1802-1827) ist nach wie vor bekannt für seine Sagen und Märchen, die sich noch immer großer Beliebtheit erfreuen.Novalis (1772-1801), der eigentlich Friedrich von Hardenberg hieß, war ein Schriftsteller und Philosoph der Frühromantik. Zwei seiner Werke wurden nie vollendet.Adalbert von Chamisso (1781-1838) war ein Naturforscher und Dichter. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehört „Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte".
